The US Patent Office went all Dikembe Mutombo on the Vegas Golden Knights and rejected their patent application:
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office denied the Vegas Golden Knights’ trademark application, citing possible confusion with the Golden Knights of the College of Saint Rose in Albany, N.Y.
That’s right, NCAA DII powerhouse College of Saint Rose is standing between a brand new NHL franchise and their right to exclusivity. Though they don’t have a football team, the CSR men’s basketball team is a juggernaut, starting the season 9-2. Their athletic program’s Twitter has been all over this news, re-tweeting it immediately to its 2K followers. They also basked in the glory of victory for a bit:
Introducing ourselves. We’re the Golden Knights of Saint Rose. You may have heard of us. Proud of our name and heritage. pic.twitter.com/pore2Q5E0X

Couldn’t hit the follow button faster after I saw that one. The real Golden Knights just got a new fan.
So what is the Vegas Fake Golden Knights’ next move? I’m no lawyer, but I do hope CSR stands strong here. If not, I’m hoping Vegas has to cut them a hefty check for everything that has the Golden Knights logo on it. I wouldn’t settle for anything less than 50% of all proceeds. If I’m College of Saint Rose I want a nickel for every time someone says the words ‘Golden Knights’. Also, rough start for Vegas. Probably should’ve checked into this before they did that whole announcement thing.
