It really hurts my soul to see one of the best baseball players of all time not getting the attention he deserves. Yes, barring a catastrophic injury Mike Trout will go down as one of the best players ever. If you don’t think so kindly remove your head from your ass.
The Angels had 74 wins last season while having the player with the highest WAR by an extremely wide margin. Trout was a 10.6 while the NL MVP Kris Bryant was at 7.7. In fact, Trout has been the AL leader in WAR for the past five seasons. How is it that a team which has a player worth 10 wins just by himself only accumulates 74 for an entire season?
This is also while having a still very dangerous player in Albert Pujols playing way better than most 37 year olds. The surrounding cast is beyond terrible, and it’s not getting better any time soon. The Angels failed to have a prospect in the MLB.com Top 100 list this year, which makes three consecutive years of not making the list. These top 100 lists aren’t the end-all-be-all of determining farm system health, but you have to try really hard to not have a guy sneak in since 2014.
I don’t want to see the best years of Trout be wasted on a team constantly treading water. Sure, the Angels could rebound this season but their long-term future is not bright. In Chicago we saw Chris Sale completely pants opposing hitters day after day but it never really mattered because they’ve been so average. Now he’s in Boston where the rest of the nation will hate him but at least we’ll see him on the biggest stages. I would rather see Trout join a super team, wearing Yankees or Cubs pinstripes rather than not see him playing in games that matter.
