The deal is worth $3MM and comes with $500K in performance-based bonuses. Smith has perhaps had an under-appreciated career, posting a 2.93 ERA through ten seasons. However, his extremely high FIP from last season doesn’t exactly predict more of that to come. With his 3.46 ERA came a 4.99 FIP, which indicates he wasn’t quite as good as what his outcomes were. In fact, in his 14 inning with the Cubs his FIP was an astronomical 5.94.
