Blue Jays to Sign Joe Smith

Another aging but reliable reliever is off the board as teams who look to be in contention this season try to sure up their bullpen.

The deal is worth $3MM and comes with $500K in performance-based bonuses. Smith has perhaps had an under-appreciated career, posting a 2.93 ERA through ten seasons. However, his extremely high FIP from last season doesn’t exactly predict more of that to come. With his 3.46 ERA came a 4.99 FIP, which indicates he wasn’t quite as good as what his outcomes were. In fact, in his 14 inning with the Cubs his FIP was an astronomical 5.94.
